The energy efficiency grading system for the United Kingdom has been created by the 'Energy Saving Trust'. You will probably be quite familiar with the logo which is plastered on a number of appliances and their packaging. Below is an example of the logo,
The trust was created to advise UK citizens on the most appropriate energy saving measures for their home. The trust is funded by the UK government, and like most national bodies their headquarters are based in London. The trust's logo is only provided to appliances which meet their exacting expectations. Therefore if you see the 'Energy Saving' logo on a product you can be reassured it's one of the most efficient appliances in it's category. The EU also has an energy saving label. Graded from A, (best) to G (worst). The EU has made it law in the UK for all manufacturers to display this logo on refrigeration products. For fridges the highest EU energy label grade is currently A++. Below is an image of the EU grading system,
A break down of the power consumption by each grade per year is provided below,
The A+ and A++ grades only exist in the EU grading system for refrigeration products. The technology has advanced so much the only option was to increase above the 'A' grade. As you can see the 'A+' grade is around 25% improved over the 'A' grade, and the 'A++' grade is around 50% improved over the 'A' grade. These grades are therefore significant improvements.
