Cleaning and preparing to deep freeze

It's important to thoroughly clean fridges and freezers before use, and for general maintenance to avoid odours. It is recommended to use a lukewarm solution of water (45-50 degrees C), and a bicarbonate of soda (180 grams per litre of water). You should avoid using strong detergents for cleaning purposes, they may leave trace amounts of poisons and a general over powering odour. The length and quality of a frozen foodstuff depends on it's packaging, the plastic wrapping used needs to be air tight. Waxed cardboard is also used by most frozen food companies to add an extra zeal. You can buy special freeze packing materials from most supermarkets and department stores.

Defrosting

A standard freezer should be defrosted every eight months or so. Otherwise a thick layer of frost will develop at the top of the drawers, and can even immobilise a drawer from being opened. It also stops the circulation of cold air, which in turns effects the ability of the freezer to keep foodstuff frozen at the correct temperature. The general procedure for defrosting is as follows, turn off the freezer, remove the food and wrap it up in cloth, then place a bowl of warm water at the bottom of the freezer. You then close the freezer door or lid and wait for a couple of hours.

What to do in times of failure

Even though most fridges and freezers are built to a high standard, with reliability foremost in most manufacturers mind, failures do still occur. Problems can also occur with a sudden power cut, frozen food should usually not be effected for twelve hours so long as the door is keep shut. It also helps if the freezer is packed full. If the repair work will take longer than twenty four hours you will need to transfer the contents of the freezer to another freezer.

Common problems

If the fridge / freezer is noisy,

- Check to make sure the compressor unit is not pressed against a wall, or something has fallen against the compressor.

- Make sure the appliance is on a level surface.

- Double check the pipes at the rear of the appliance so they are not pressed against something or vibrating erratically.

- In some older models the refrigerant liquid can create a bubbling noise, this is quite normal.

If the fridge / freezer fails to power on,

- Check that there is a power failure, so check other appliances and your house lights.

- Ensure the appliance is firmly plugged into the wall socket. And also that the wall socket is pressed on.

- Check the fuse in the plug, and that the main power lead is in tact.

- Check the thermostat settings, incase it has accidentally been switched off.

- Make sure the door was not left open, which can cause the motor to burn out.

- If every obvious reason has been ticked off, then it is time to contact your nearest repair centre.
